The Rottweiler Chihuahua Mix is a crossbreed of a Chihuahua and a Rottweiler; this mix has two outcomes: a large dog with a black coat and rust markings or a small dog with either a smooth or furry skin. The mix tends to have the Rottweiler’s coat color in terms of coat color.

When you look at the parent breeds, they look mismatched, Rottweilers are large dogs, and Chihuahuas are the smallest dog breeds; regardless, a new dog breed has been produced.

The Rottweiler Chihuahua Mix came into existence due to the crossbreed between a Rottweiler and Chihuahua. Rottweiler and Chihuahua are two separate breeds with different traits and characteristics. So, to properly understand what their mix would look like, we must first consider the parent breeds.

Rottweiler

Rottweilers are one of the oldest dog breeds, and their origin can be traced back to the Roman empire. Rottweilers are known to be very intelligent, loyal, and working dogs used by the Romans to protect their livestock. Sometimes around the 2nd century, when the Roman empire fell, Rottweilers became working dogs for local butchers in Germany.

Back then, whenever the butchers were traveling with money, the Rottweiler would accompany them and serve as protection. Later on, they were also used for other jobs like guiding people with vision loss and acting as search and rescue dogs for the police. Rottweilers are strongly built with a terrifying look.

However, they are calm, peaceful, confident, brave, protective, and great family dogs. They have a height of about 22 to 27 inches and a weight of about 80 to 130 pounds when fully grown. They could live for about 9 to 10 years when properly cared for. Rottweilers have a medium-length coat with an undercoat. They shed all year round and are moderate shedders. Also, they come in colors black, tan, and mahogany.

Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are known to be one of the smallest dog breeds in the world. Their history could be traced back to Latin America, where they were first seen and used for some religious activities and sacrifices by the Toltecs, Mayans, and Aztecs. In the early 19th century, some tourists from America went to Chihuahua, a city in Mexico.

Then, they noticed and developed an interest in the Chihuahua breed. When they traveled back home, they went home with some Chihuahua breeds. Gradually, the dog breed began to gain popularity and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1904. These dogs are now very popular today, even among top celebrities globally.

Chihuahuas are intelligent dogs and can compete in agility and obedience trials. Their coats come in two different varieties, either short or long coats. Chihuahuas have a life expectancy rate of about 14 to 16 years.

A fully grown Chihuahua could have a height of about 5 to 8 inches with a weight of not more than 6 pounds. Due to their petite size, they are very delicate, and families with kids are usually not advised to breed them.

Chihuahua Mixed With Rottweiler

When two separate dog breeds are mixed, the result leads to another unique breed that usually takes both parents’ traits. When a Chihuahua is mixed with a Rottweiler, a new dog mix is produced, and it is often called Rottuahua, Chiweller, Rottie Chi Mix, or Rottchi.

Depending on the dominant parent gene, a Chiweller could appear to be a muscular and medium-sized dog like a Rottweiler or a very small and delicate pet like the Chihuahua. Their height could sometimes be above 20 inches or below 10 inches; it depends on the parent breed’s gene. Of course, the ones with a height of 20 inches take the Rottweilers gene.

Chiwellers could be very troublesome during puppyhood, as they are always very energetic. However, as they approach the age of 3 or 4, they become less energetic than in puppyhood. So, you would notice a decline in their troubles, and they often act more well behaved. They could live up to about 12 t0 16 years when properly cared for.

They come in chocolate, blue, silver, fawn, red, black, or gold color, and some could have either of these colors combined. Since Chihuahuas come in two varying coats, a Chiweller could also come in short or long coats. Regardless of the coat type, they are moderate shedders.

Also, just as Chihuahuas are known to develop a close bond with a favorite person in the house, the same thing happens to Chiweller. In families with kids or other pets, a Chiweller might not be the best option, as they are known to always show aggression towards other pets.

To curb some unwanted behaviors like being overly aggressive, it is always essential that dogs are well trained and adequately socialized and trained from puppyhood. Although, due to the stubbornness of this dog breed, they might be pretty difficult to train.

If the Rottweiler has the dominant gene, the mix is susceptible to cancer, hip dysplasia, heart issues, and elbow dysplasia. Furthermore, if the Chihuahua is the dominant parent, it is susceptible to shivering, hypoglycemia, collapsed trachea, hydrocephalus, pulmonic stenosis, and open fontanel.

However, thanks to the intelligence of both parent breeds, you could utilize this during their training sessions. Reward-based training has proven to be very effective for Chiwellers. Ensure your dog gets rewarded with a nice treat whenever it does the right thing.

However, when the dog refuses not to listen to you, always ensure you do not shout at them. Doing so could make your Chiweller anxious and scared of you. You cannot pre-determine the temperament of a Rottweiler Chihuahua mix; this is because the dog can take the temperament of the Rottweiler or the Chihuahua.

Regardless of the parent breed with the dominant gene, the dog will be bold, playful, affectionate, goofy, protective, energetic, unfriendly if not properly socialized, disobedient, prone to experiencing separation anxiety, and aggressive. The average price of a Rottweiler Chihuahua mix puppy is between $1000 to $1500.

Comparing Chihuahuas, one of the smallest dog breeds, to Rottweilers, a big and muscular dog, one could begin to imagine how they are mixed and the size of the resulting mix. For breeding, artificial insemination is the method used. The male Chihuahua sperm would be inseminated into the female Rottweiler.

As regards size, Chiweller comes in small, medium, and medium-large sizes. The dominant parent gene determines the resulting breed’s physical appearance, including size, coat color, and height. For the small sizes, both males and females have a height of about 8 to 12 inches.

The males weigh 20 to 35 pounds, while the females weigh 20 to 30 pounds. The medium-sized Chiweller male, when fully grown, has a height of about 14 to 18 inches, with a weight of 30 to 50 pounds. The females have a height of about 13 to 17 inches, with a weight of 20 to 45 pounds.

The medium-large Chiweller male could grow to a height of about 17 to 20 inches with a weight of 50 to 80 pounds. The females have an average height of about 16 to 18 inches with a weight of about 40 to 65 pounds.

Final Thoughts
